The kit has moved on. Once it was heavier, louder, and less safe. Now a small drone lifts safely alongside the ground work to capture wide landscapes and close details.

I have been flying drones for over a decade. The first ones were a serious commitment. Heavy. Loud. Batteries that lasted about eight minutes. A crash was not just an inconvenience, it was a piece of professional kit falling out of the sky at high speed. You did not fly them near people.

That has changed. The current generation of drones is small enough to travel in a coat pocket, quiet enough to lift near a wedding party without becoming the story, and safe enough that the risk assessments are meaningfully different. What used to be a specialist add-on with real logistics has become another lens in the kit bag.

What does that mean for the pictures?

It means aerial can now sit alongside the ground work rather than replacing it or waiting until it. On a wedding day the drone can go up during the ceremony walk, come back down for the rings, go back up during the reception. On a landscape or editorial commission it can capture the wide establisher and then the tight detail from twenty metres in the same afternoon. That kind of flexibility was not available five years ago.
